The biophysical profile (BPP) is a prenatal assessment of fetal well-being that assigns scores based on five parameters observed over a 30-minute ultrasound examination: fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, fetal tone, amniotic fluid volume, and (when combined with a non-stress test) fetal heart rate reactivity. Each parameter is scored 0 or 2, for a maximum score of 10. A score of 8–10 is reassuring; lower scores may indicate fetal compromise and prompt further evaluation or delivery planning.
