Many sonography programs expect applicants to have completed certain coursework before they start. Prerequisites do two things: they make sure students can handle the science the program is built on, and they let degree and certificate programs move faster by assuming a shared foundation. The exact list is set by each program, so the items below are the common ones, not a universal requirement.
The subjects programs commonly require
The coursework that appears most often across sonography programs reflects what the field actually uses day to day:
- Anatomy and physiology. Sonographers image organs and systems and need to recognize normal structure before they can spot the abnormal. This is the most commonly required foundation.
- College-level math. Algebra is frequently expected, because the physics of ultrasound and the machine settings rest on it.

There is no single national prerequisite list. A two-year associate program may build some of this coursework into the early terms, while a certificate program for career-changers may require an existing degree plus specific prerequisite courses completed in advance. Some programs ask for a minimum grade in prerequisite science courses, and some require recent completion.
