Sonography Prerequisite Coursework

The subjects sonography programs commonly require before admission, why they matter, and why the exact list depends on the program.

Many sonography programs expect applicants to have completed certain coursework before they start. Prerequisites do two things: they make sure students can handle the science the program is built on, and they let degree and certificate programs move faster by assuming a shared foundation. The exact list is set by each program, so the items below are the common ones, not a universal requirement.

The subjects programs commonly require

The coursework that appears most often across sonography programs reflects what the field actually uses day to day:

  • Anatomy and physiology. Sonographers image organs and systems and need to recognize normal structure before they can spot the abnormal. This is the most commonly required foundation.
  • College-level math. Algebra is frequently expected, because the physics of ultrasound and the machine settings rest on it.
  • Physics. Ultrasound is sound physics applied to imaging, and the SPI exam every ARDMS credential requires is a physics exam. A background here helps with both the program and the exam. See The SPI Physics Exam.
  • Medical terminology and patient care. Some programs expect these so students arrive ready for clinical settings.

A strong background in biology, anatomy, and physics is useful preparation for the field even where a specific course is not strictly required.

Why it varies by program

There is no single national prerequisite list. A two-year associate program may build some of this coursework into the early terms, while a certificate program for career-changers may require an existing degree plus specific prerequisite courses completed in advance. Some programs ask for a minimum grade in prerequisite science courses, and some require recent completion. Because of this variation, the reliable step is to read the specific program’s admission requirements rather than assume a general list applies.

How prerequisites connect to the rest

Prerequisites feed directly into the program’s own curriculum, which builds from physics and anatomy into hands-on scanning. Curriculum and Coursework covers what the program itself teaches, and Educational Pathways covers how the routes differ. Confirming prerequisites early matters because missing one can delay admission by a full term.
